COLLIERVILLE By Jennifer Casey

Government Recycler of the Year

In the summer of 2014, the Town of Collierville’s Public Pictured at the Tennessee Recycling Coalition Annual Conference from the
Service Department began its new curbside recycle collection Collierville Public Services Department are (L-R) Josh Russell, Assistant to the
program. With the goal of reducing cost, promoting positive Solid Waste Manager, John Fox, Operations Assistant, and Bill Kilp, Director of
customer service and increasing recycling participation, the town the Public Services Department.
converted from a privately contracted recycle collection opera-
tion utilizing 17-gallon recycle bins to a more efficient town em-
ployee operated recycle collection utilizing automated collection
trucks and free 96-gallon recycle carts.

Prior to beginning the Collierville operated recycle collection
program, an average of 50 percent of homes were participating
in recycling. However, within the first 4 months of the delivery of
the new 96-gallon recycle carts, residential participation in-
creased to over 72 percent. Bringing the service in-house resulted
in greatly improved quality of service with increased customer
participation and fewer missed collections.

Based on the success of the new program implementation,
the Tennessee Recycling Coalition, sponsored by the Tennes-
see Department of Environment and Conservation, named the
Town of Collierville the “2014 Government Recycler of the Year.”
Representatives from Collierville’s Public Service Department at-
tended the Tennessee Recycling Coalition Annual Conference on
February 23, 2015 to accept the award.

“I appreciate the opportunity to highlight our department’s
commitment to providing our residents a waste collection pro-
gram that focuses on environmental responsibility and excellence
in service,” said John Fox, Public Services Operations Assistant.
