The City of Murfreesboro Engineering Department - Street Division bought a new Cat® M318D
Wheel Excavator to take on projects that were larger than a standard backhoe could handle. What
they found, however, it that the 318D can do more jobs than the department even imagined, says
Superintendent Raymond Hillis.
“It’s so much bigger, and so much stronger,” Hillis comments. “It gives us the ability to take on much
larger projects ourselves, rather than having to outsource. We’ve added a new storm drain crew, for
example, and the 318D can do any of our storm drain functions that are required. With the new machine,
we can work with larger ditches and larger pipes.”
Environmental Engineer Sam Huddleston reports, “We found
we can use the 318D for asphalt repair; it’s much quicker
and stronger in pulling up asphalt. It’s also used for sidewalk
repair, and it works great on residential demolition projects.”
