Where Community Comes First

Serving over 35,000 customers over 62 square miles, First Utility District of Knox County (FUD) is one of the largest
water and wastewater districts in the state of Tennessee. Last year, FUD provided 4.4 billion gallons of water at
one of the lowest rates in the state. Bruce Giles, FUD General Manager, stated, “I’m proud that our organization
is dedicated to advancing our District through innovation and improvement, keeping integrity as our core focus.”
Last year, FUD adopted OpenROV, an underwater drone for inspecting water tanks, and ZAP units, which monitor
water prior to entering the plants allowing for the optimal treatment options early. These advancements keep FUD
on the cutting edge of the industry and enhance the services offered to their customers. First Utility District’s tag
line is, “Where community comes first”, and this embodies everything they do. FUD proudly supports non-profit
organizations including: KARM, Helen Ross McNabb Center, Knox ProCorps, Knoxville Fellows, and TN Achieves.
FUD has over $290,000,000 invested in infrastructure, treatment plants, storage tanks, pumping stations, and
pipes. To service this investment and their 600 miles of pipe in water distribution and 650 miles of pipe in
wastewater collection system FUD depends upon a large fleet of equipment. John Powers, Capital Construction
Supervisor, declared, “You just can’t beat the dependability of our Cat equipment and the dealer support.”
Currently, John and his team depend upon their excavators (305ECR and 308E), skid steer loader (259D), and
wheel loader (924K) to replace pipe in a neighborhood. Focusing on the impact to their customers, John and his
team prioritize doing the job right the first time and keeping their jobsite clean.
