Golf Outing

The Annual Golf Tournament, held on Tuesday, at
The Links at Galloway Golf Course, attracted 36 players
this year. A little light rain didn’t dampen the spirit of
the golfers.

Bayou Gayoso Pumping Station Tour

Approximately 23 people attended the tour of the
recently refurbished Bayou Gayoso Pumping Station. Built
in 1916, the equipment consists of four 72-inch Horizontal
Centrifugal Pumps, driven by 750-hp Induction Motors
which pump 1,200 cu. ft. of water per second. The overall
length of the pump and motor is 35.5 ft.; the height is 15 ft.
and the weight of one pump is 90 tons.

The station is idle most of the time, but when the
Mississippi is swollen with rain and runoff, it is needed
to lift millions of gallons of water over levee so creeks
and sewers don't back up in downtown and Mid-town.

The Gayoso pumping station is one of seven pumping
stations that are part of the Flood Protection System
(FPS), which provides internal drainage during periods
of high river stages. Additionally, the system uses 14
reservoirs, flood walls, and earthen levees to protect low
areas from rising water. There is a continuous line of
protection along the Wolf River consisting of concrete
flood walls and earthen levees from the Welcome
Center at the foot of Jefferson Ave to Douglass Park.
To the south along Nonconnah Creek, a continuous
earthen levee runs from near its mouth to just east of the
intersection of Industrial Ave. and Prospect Street.

A highlight of the tour was to see the historic Allis-
Chalmers pump whirl into action.

Community Outreach at the Rodeo

Students of the Memphis Academy of Science
and Engineering had a very special field trip to the
Equipment Rodeo! The school serves grades 6 through
12 and has an enrollment of about 550 to 600 students
per year and it was a very unique opportunity for a
select group of students to be able to see the best of the
best operators from across the state in action.
