The building was designed not just with
the environment in mind, but also while
considering its future occupants and their
needs. “When firefighters are leaving
on a call, the last thing on their mind is
turning off the lights,” says Mike Leonard, temperature, water, and energy usage, via

All of the lights in the facility were
therefore installed with motion sensors to
automatically turn off after long moments
of inactivity. An outdoor unit with a
decoupled system manages heating and
cooling, and also circulates outside air
into the facility to dilute CO2 content,
with a filtration system to keep out outside 17, a non-LEED certified station, by
particulates.
Following the initial construction,
the department stays involved through
monitoring and tracking. Once the
building was finished, the Energy Manager
at General Services’ Center of Responsible
Energy began monitoring the building’s
the facility’s building automation system.
In this way, the team can detect any
unusual spikes in energy, and troubleshoot
and solve problems as they arise.
Taking all of these energy efficiency
measures into account, Station 19’s annual
energy use intensity for the 2016 calendar
year was 58.3 kBtu. Nashville’s Fire Station
behind the building
comparison had a 2016 EUI of 164.7 kBtu.
In other words, Station 19’s EUI is only 35
percent of a local comparable building’s.
And in terms of expenses, in 2016 Fire
Station 19 saved a total of $49,987 in
energy costs, with a simple payback
estimated at being just under five years,
including the photovoltaic panels.
