Some wish for “Lady Luck,” but in
Johnson City, they are enjoying the recent
dedication of their historic lady, the
Lady of the Fountain. Located in Foun-
tain Square in the early 1900s, she has a
long history. She was moved to several
different locations in the city following
the necessity to accommodate new traffic
patterns and parking in the downtown.
Around 1943, the six-foot solid bronze
statue was actually discarded in the land-
fill. After being saved from the landfill
and stored in a barn, the Lady in the
Fountain even spent some time in a North
Carolina flower garden until the Johnson
City Chamber of Commerce was able to
negotiate her return. The original lady is
now stationed in the municipal and safety
building while a recast of the original
monument adorns the downtown once An amphitheater will be a lovely venue in the five-acre park for concerts and other outdoor events
again in Fountain Square. (photo provided by Lee Talbert/Johnson City Press).
