TENNESSEE PUBLIC WORKS INSTITUTE By John Calvert

TPWI Completes Twelve Years

TCAPWA’s Tennessee Public Works Maintenance Technologies Class - July 2015
Institute completed 12 years of classes Public Works Administration Class - September 2015
with its December 2015 Construction
Inspection four-day class. Since it was
established in 2003, TPWI has held 37
schools that have been attended by nearly
1,000 employees from over 70 agencies
across Tennessee. The success of TPWI
can be attributed to its low registration
fees and the 37 volunteer instructors
who have given their time and efforts in
making the many trips to Murfreesboro
since the program started.

TPWI offers six different schools.
In 2015, TPWI conducted its schools
on Maintenance Technologies for
Public Works Personnel, Public Works
Administration and Construction
Inspection. The other three schools
offered include Stormwater Management,
Public Works Supervision and Fleet
Management. The classes to be offered
in 2016 will be decided based on results
from a TPWI Survey that was emailed to
TCAPWA members in February. Once
the schedule of classes and dates for 2016
are determined they will be posted on
the TCAPWA website (tennessee.apwa.
net), TPW Magazine and also emailed to
TCAPWA members.

Some minor changes and additions to
some of the classes will be made in 2016
to allow TPWI to become accredited
by APWA and to allow credits for those
attendees who are pursuing the APWA
Donald Stone Leadership program.

Classes are held at Construction Inspection Class - December 2015
the DoubleTree Hotel
in Murfreesboro and
taught by a team
of volunteers. John
Calvert, left, is the
Director of TPWI.
