TCAPWA EVENTS AND HIGHLIGHTS
TPWI Begins Fifteenth Year in 2017 By John Calvert
TCAPWA’s Tennessee Public Works In- Maintenance Technologies School - July 2016
stitute completed 14 years of classes with Public Works Supervision School - September 2016
its December 2016 Fleet Management
four-day class. Since it was established
in 2003, TPWI has now conducted 40
schools that have been attended by nearly
1,000 employees from over 70 agencies
across Tennessee. The success of TPWI
can be attributed to its low registration
fees and the 37 volunteer instructors who
have given their time and efforts in mak-
ing the many trips to Murfreesboro since
the program started.
TPWI offers six different schools. In
2016, TPWI conducted its schools on
Maintenance Technologies for Public
Works Personnel, Public Works Supervi-
sion and Public Fleet Management. The
other three schools offered by TPWI
include Stormwater Management, Public
Works Administration and Construction
Inspection.
The classes to be offered in 2017 will
be decided based on results from a TPWI
Survey that was emailed to TCAPWA
members in February. Once the sched-
ule of classes and dates for 2017 are
determined, they will be posted on the
TCAPWA website (tennessee.apwa.net),
TPW Magazine and also emailed to
TCAPWA members.
The goal of TPWI is to provide Public
Works related education for all levels of
employees at low costs that are affordable
for any size local government. Attendance
to all six of TPWI’s schools is estimated
to provide the equivalent information of
knowledge that might otherwise take at-
tendees 10 years or more to acquire in on
the job experience.
The low costs for TPWI’s schools are
made possible by annual $10,000 sponsor-
ships provided by TCAPWA. The sponsor-
ship normally covers approximately half of
the costs for each attendee while registra-
tion fees cover the remaining costs.
Classes are held at Fleet Management School - December 2016
the DoubleTree Hotel
in Murfreesboro and
taught by a team
of volunteers. John
Calvert, left, is the
Director of TPWI.
