TAUD REGION 2 MEETING By Kenny Wiggins
Best Tasting Water Contest
Region 2 of the Tennessee Association of Utility Districts met Best Tasting Water winners and judges
on March 2 at the City of Alcoa Service Center. With 110 people
in attendance, the feature event of the day was the Region’s Best
Tasting Water Contest. Water samples from 11 Region 2 utilities
were sampled by a panel of judges: Mike Atchley, Director of
Water Resources, Knoxville Environmental Field Office, Tennes-
see Department of Environment & Conservation; Neal Denton,
Director of the University of Tennessee Knoxville Institute of
Agriculture; and Robert Peace, Trinity Benefits.
Lenoir City Utilities Board was crowned the 2016 winner
and will represent Region 2 in statewide competition. The
statewide winner will advance to the national stage.
The meeting’s technical program consisted of two
presentations. Aaron Lancaster, Teklinks, briefed the crowd on
various aspects of cyber security and the potential threats for
both utility systems and individuals. An overview of backup
pumps (in lieu of emergency generators) was provided by
Josh Cravens, Wascon, Inc. The relative pros and cons of both
backup generators and backup pumps were cited and several
applications examined.
Updates were provided by representatives from the Ru-
ral Development Agency, Tennessee 811, and TDEC Water
Resources. Updates on legislative action, water and wastewater
training, and the financing market were given by TAUD repre-
sentatives. The meeting and meal were sponsored by Teklinks
and Wascon.
