TCAPWA EVENTS AND HIGHLIGHTS By Molly Gilbert
Upper East Branch Meets in Sevierville
The Upper East Branch met on March 30 at Uncle Buck’s Restau- Left to right: Kasey Krouse, City of Knoxville; Upper East Branch Director Nick
rant in Sevierville. Branch Director Nick Bradshaw reminded the Bradshaw, City of Knoxville; Jenny Gulick, Davey Resource Group; and sponsor
crowd of over 40 attendees about several upcoming TPWI classes, Cynthia Bullard, Scientific Sales, Inc.
Young Professional events and industry conferences.
Scientific Sales, Inc., located in Oak Ridge, sponsored the lun-
cheon and made a brief presentation about the variety of laboratory
and safety supplies they carry, as well as the opportunity for training
classes.
Certified Arborist Jenny Gulick of the Davey Resource Group
presented information about the importance of having a tree
inventory. Her presentation emphasized trees in public spaces as
community assets.
“You can’t manage what you don’t measure,” Gulick said. “Public
Works managers have so much to do, so many hats to wear. This
[tree inventory] helps you prioritize what you need to do.”
City of Knoxville’s Urban Forester Kasey Krouse presented infor-
mation about the recent process of collecting size, species, location
and more, in several different neighborhoods, regional parks, and
major highways and byways to get a snapshot of what the urban tree
population looks like in Knoxville.
Hired in 2012, Krouse said 75 percent of his time is dedicated to
safety related issues. “For where Knoxville was at the time, it was a
great process to go through to try to get to the next step.”
“Trees are an asset and they can cause serious issues if they are
not managed,” City of Knoxville Public Service Director Chad Weth
said. “Even with the size of Knoxville, we were 99 percent reactive,
now we can be proactive.”
