UPDATE: Alcoa’s Landfill GTE Facility

Three Years of Service
On Friday, August 26, 2011, the official “ribbon Landfill Gas-to-Energy Revenues
cutting” was held on the landfill gas-to-energy
(LFGTE) facility at the Alcoa / Maryville / Blount Enerdyne Energy Systems / Alcoa Gas Producers, LLC
County Landfill. The landfill is jointly owned by the
three local governments and is operated by the Alcoa REVENUE PERIOD AMOUNT
Public Works & Engineering Department. Three years August-11 $2,659.60
into the operation, how has the project gone? September-11 $3,148.40
Significant Emissions Reduction October-11 $3,505.60

A few background facts about Alcoa’s LFGTE November-11 $3,340.80
facility: first, its construction, operation and
maintenance are being funded completely by December-11 $3,460.00
Enerdyne Power Systems (dba Alcoa Gas Producers January-12 $3,184.40
(AGP)). It’s powered by a 1500 HP Caterpillar February-12 $3,174.80
reciprocating engine / generator which is capable March-12 $3,465.20
of producing 999 kilowatts of power for sale to
TVA through Fort Loudoun Electric Cooperative 2011 Carbon Revenue $24,363.46
(FLEC). Fueled by “conditioned” landfill gas, the CAT April-12 $3,382.80
generator consumes roughly 2,000 tons of methane May-12 $3,486.00
gas per year that would otherwise be released to the June-12 $3,244.80
atmosphere.
This annual emissions reduction is about the same Annual License Fee $1,000.00 Year 1 Total
as removing 8,100 passenger cars from the highways. July-12 $3,400.40 $64,816.26
It’s also equivalent to the carbon sequestered annually
by 9,000 acres of pine or fir forests. August-12 $3,336.40
AGP pays monthly gas usage payments to the city September-12 $2,995.20
of Alcoa. These funds are then used to help fund October-12 $3,170.40
operations of the Landfill. For operations through November-12 $1,980.40
June 30, 2014, AGP has paid the city $165,269.54 for: (Facility offline for 16 days)
• Revenue from sale of electricity to TVA December-12 $3,456.80
• Annual gas destruction revenues January-13 $3,347.60
• Annual license fees February-13 $3,043.20

Periodic Operational Adjustments March-13 $3,384.40
During construction and in the three years of the April-13 $3,118.00
LFGTE operation, the Landfill staff has adjusted May-13 $2,906.00
operations from time to time as AGP has installed June-13 $2,627.20
and maintained their methane collection system that
feeds the generator. Some assistance with installation 2012 Carbon Revenue $28,242.74
and maintenance has also been provided. Landfill staff Annual License Fee $1,000.00 Year 2 Total
has also constructed a drive and other miscellaneous July-13 $3,448.40 $66,056.74
improvements that allow FLEC better access to the
interface between AGP and FLEC. Aside from that, August-13 $3,398.80
AGP’s LFGTE facility is a stand-alone operation. September-13 $3,567.60

Tremendous Community Asset October-13 $3,677.61
In the long term, the project may have cost November-13 $3,269.75
savings benefits at the time of the landfill’s closure. December-13 $3,469.01
If still operational at that time, the AGP gas system January-14 $1,509.62
may reduce, if not eliminate, the cost of methane
collection systems required for post-closure care. February-14 $3,063.52
The LFGTE facility has been a tremendous asset March-14 $3,509.19 Year 3 Thru April
for both the city of Alcoa and AGP with both parties April-14 $3,163.56 $28,628.66
looking forward to many more years of operation.
