and Engineering Division offices. The garage was
upgraded and now houses Vehicle Maintenance. The
former detail shop now houses the Traffic Signal
Division complete with a clean room to work on
signal equipment. The area behind the administrative
offices has been remodeled to house Street
Maintenance crews in Drainage and Construction,
Concrete and ROW Maintenance, as well as tool
storage, locker room and the break room. A separate
building on site, once the body shop, houses the
Sanitation and the Sign Shop.
Room for a Rain Garden Vehicle Maintenance Shop
Cookeville’s Public Works Department is the home
of the Stormwater Management Program. In keeping
with the green infrastructure philosophy, the city is
constructing a 3000 sq.ft. rain garden/Bioretention
cell designed to detain the ten-year storm runoff
from roughly one-third of the site. Asphalt was
removed from about one-half acre to bring the
total green space on the site to 15% of the total to
promote infiltration of stormwater. Multiple sheds
were installed to allow for undercover storage for all
equipment on site, which allows the city to apply for a
No Exposure Certification from TDEC.
Although the Public Works team members
are pleased with their new home, the citizens of
Cookeville are the ultimate beneficiaries of this Wash Bay
new space.
