and diverse fleet running efficiently.

Jonesborough, a town of approximately
6,000 people, is located in rural northeast
Tennessee. Although the city is small, the
demands to maintain and repair the fleet
for community needs are still large. To
meet these needs, their three-man fleet
maintenance crew operates and maintains
over 206 pieces of individual equipment
that range from heavy trucks to pipe bor-
ing machines. They are not satisfied to
just maintain the equipment, but instead
they strive for perfection and have been
acknowledged accordingly.

The highly qualified mechanics have
been recognized by the prestigious 100
Best Fleets Awards, a national award com-
mittee that recognizes excellence in fleet
management techniques and practices,
not just once, but four times since the
award’s inception 16 years ago. For the
quiet town of Jonesborough to win an
award of this stature shows an impressive
dedication to sustainability. This award
puts them in the same tier as the New
York City Police Department and the Dis-
trict of Columbia Water Department.

The 100 Best Fleets Awards are tailored
to determine the best public sector Fleet
Management Departments in North
America. Criteria for these awards,
including accountability, efficient use
of technology, creativity, staff develop-
ment, and resource stewardship provide
a detailed base to judge the dynamic pool
of fleet management industry candidates.
Tom C. Johnson, creator of the awards,
said, “The awards recognize excellence
in public service and Jonesborough has
sustained excellence through proven lead-
ership. Every initiative begins and ends
with leadership. There is complete buy-in
